Crystal Palace started their campaign in the Premier League this season with a demoralising loss in their opening fixture to newcomers Huddersfield Town, who are playing in the Premier League after 45 years. The South London club were outplayed on every front, making it the worst possible start for their new manager Frank De Boer, who took charge in the summer after Sam Allardyce parted ways with the club, having inspired them to retain a place in the top flight after an early relegation scare.
The Dutch legend has been shocked with the way his team was outplayed in their very first match of the campaign and might be on his way to change a number of things in his team, especially in the heart of the defence. The Eagles have been lacking depth in their backline since the departure of French defender Mamadou Sakho, whose arrival in January last year on loan from Liverpool was inspiring enough for them to save the season.
Palace tried their level best to get Sakho back in their team for this term as well on a permanent basis but had to cool off their interest in the player having a price tag of £30 million put on him by the Reds.
However, the Eagles have eyed a number of players in the ongoing summer transfer market to give them stability in the backline and one name that is right on the top of the list for them is that of the Austrian centre back Kevin Wimmer, who is currently a part of the Tottenham Hotspur team.
The 24-year-old defender arrived at the club in the 2015 summer transfer window and has been used in bits and pieces role in the last couple of seasons. With the Belgian pair of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld at their prime in the heart of the defence for the Spurs, it has been very difficult for the Austrian international to make the cut. He made only 31 appearances for the Premier League club throughout the last two seasons and might be interested in making a move to a club which can offer him more first team appearances.
A number of clubs from the Premier League as well as the other European leagues are looking to bag the player for the new season, with Crystal Palace in the pursuit as well. With the Eagles needing some top quality player as a cover for their backline, Wimmer can turn out to be the best option to fit the bill for them in the summer.
