It seems nothing is going Liverpool’s way at the moment. Following their failed attempt to land Virgil van Dijk from mid table club Southampton, the Reds are now in danger of losing their star man Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona now. And if recent reports in Spain are to be believed then they saw a bid rejected yet again, this time for 16-year-old sensation Victor Mollejo.
The Atletico Madrid teenager is touted by many to be Spain’s next big star in the making and the Rojo Blancos are dead against selling him anytime soon. The youngster wasn’t lured by Liverpool’s approach as well, which shows the fallen brand name of the club over the years and Diego Simeone has awarded the player with a first team chance in their pre-season friendly as a precautionary measure.
Amidst the vile criticism that the club has received for failing to add more defensive reinforcements this summer, the Reds failed to win their opening game against Watford on Saturday conceding three goals. Liverpool challenge on four fronts this season and any misstep on the bigger platforms could cost Jurgen Klopp his post for sure.
Liverpool have been playing some exciting football under the German gaffer over the past two seasons but his tendency to undermine defence has cost them big time in many games. Klopp, however, has gone for more attacking options yet again this summer bringing in Mohamed Salah from Fiorentina and Dominic Solanke from Chelsea.
Of course, the arrival of Mollejo wouldn’t have made him their first-choice striker overnight, but Liverpool have always had this knack of recognizing top talents and Simeone seems to believe that the player is ready to challenge for the first team. The Argentine was seen bringing him off the bench against Spanish side Leganes with just 10 minutes to go.
Mollejo became the first player born since the year 2000 to play for Atletico Madrid. He brings back memories of a young Fernando Torres leading the Atletico side when he was very young and fans believe Mollejo could attain the same stature or even surpass it.
Jurgen Klopp is definitely expected to come back with a better offer for the player and their current suspension from registering youth players is only limited to signing them from other English clubs and getting in Mollejo would fall outside the jurisdiction of FA.
Mollejo is known for his tremendous versatility in the attacking third as he can play in almost any position up front. Although only 16, his knowledge of the game exceeds way beyond his age.
