Jurgen Klopp’s men failed to take more than a point from their trip to Watford in their first game of the new campaign but there were a number of positives to take from their performances on the night. However, Klopp will have understood that his side still needs a few additions to challenge for the title this season.
He has been linked with a number of star players for a move this summer and one player now extensively linked with a move to Anfield is Diego Laxalt.
According to reports, Liverpool are one of the many clubs who are keeping an eye on the Uruguay star. Also linked with a move to Fiorentina and AS Roma, the versatile Uruguay star is one of the most exciting players in the domestic circuit in his country and had a stellar time in Serie A in the previous campaign.
A product of the Defensor Sporting Academy in his home town, the Montevideo born midfielder is capable of playing as a winger or as a full-back with equal discipline. A defensive minded player who relies on his understanding of the game, Laxalt loves to have the ball at his feet and is confident of his abilities to beat his man.
He is extremely well drilled in putting in tackles and hardly allows his man past while his ability to hold on to the ball in dangerous areas makes him potentially an effective player in England. He is also strong in the air but has to work on his crossing if played as a full-back but his dynamic approach to the game will surely attract Jurgen Klopp.
At just 24, Laxalt already has 98 Serie A appearances where he has six goals and nine assists and has also represented his country three times already. He is slowly establishing himself at the highest level and is a player who will thrive under Jurgen Klopp.
Full of energy and willing to learn, Laxalt could slot in at left-back straight away at Anfield, which will allow Liverpool to off load Spanish star Alberto Moreno. He may also be eyed as a holding midfielder, a position Jurgen Klopp has recently spoken about.
His technical ability and style of play belong at the highest level and though he may not walk into the first team in the midfield, will be a more than a decent backup for contingencies. At 24, he is still learning the game and will become better, but is he the right man for Liverpool?
