After a long fought season with a decent end, English outfit Southampton will now look to fight for a place in Europe this season and Mauricio Pellegrino, the new boss at the St Mary’s is looking to make some exciting additions to help them achieve their goals.
The manager wants to add players to strengthen particular positions in the squad and one player he is now looking at, to improve their productivity in front of goal is Luciano Vietto.
According to reports in Spain, Southampton want Atletico Madrid attacker Luciano Vietto on a loan deal this summer. The 23-year old Argentine born attacker announced himself at the highest level when he moved to La Liga to play for Villarreal back in 2014. It took just a year for the big guns to come calling as Atletico Madrid decided to spend £17m on his services in 2015.
However, he failed to establish himself in the first team and was loaned out to Sevilla last season, where he was not that bad. He picked up six goals and three assists in 21 league games for Sevilla and was used as a striker and also on the wing extensively.
Known for his creativity in the final third, Vietto is an excellent finisher with a keen eye for goal. He can dribble past opponents with ease and is a gifted player who loves to have the ball at his feet. He is comfortable under pressure and can create chances on a regular basis in the final third. He is quick and hard to catch and at just 23, is only going to get better and is a superb option for the Saints.
Pellegrino has sold Jay Rodriguez already this summer and needs an attacking addition to his squad immediately. The duo of Shane Long and Charlie Austin is the first choice for leading the attack for Southampton and the likes of Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic are expected to play roles on the wing but for a club in the top flight, these are too few options to have in the squad.
They have no players in attack with top flight experience after the four and adding an attacker is an immediate requirement for the Saints this summer. And Vietto is as good an option as any.
He is an established star who has the know-how to survive in England and though he may not be able to set the league on fire, will surely help Southampton in times of need.
