Liverpool would be playing in the Champions League yet again this season and if their transfer season is anything to go by, the Reds haven’t really changed much, to be honest. They have brought in Mohamed Salah from AS Roma and Dominic Solanke from Chelsea but it only strengthens their attack that they had no problem with, in the first place.
Yes, it does solve the crisis of squad depth but their biggest concern of conceding on the counter still remains open at large and Klopp doesn’t look likely to get any world class option this late in the market. Andrew Robertson was the perfect example. The former Hull City youngster definitely has quality but a club like Liverpool should have done a lot better than that.
Strength
Of course, attack remains their strongest weapon and even though they don’t possess the best names on the paper, manager Jurgen Klopp’s uber-attacking playing style makes them the most dangerous side to defend in the league. The Reds have shown counter attacking at its best last season with the ability to pour in forwards in a flash, and the arrival of Mohamed Salah further improves upon it.
He, alongside the likes of Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana, make Liverpool tremendously fast, which is actually what makes them dangerous for the top sides that push higher up on the offensive against them.
Weakness
Liverpool’s weakness is so obvious that fans have been fuming at their manager for failing to attend to it even with all the time in the world at his hands. Their defence remains their weakest link this season again. Liverpool haven’t improved upon the duo of Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan in central defence with Joel Matip still left largely unprotected at the back. Their pre-season results remain irrelevant because it is against the mid-table and lower table sides that they struggle.
Key Players
With Phillipe Coutinho’s future at Anfield extremely uncertain, we would consider the other options in the squad that would be important for Klopp this season. Jordan Henderson remains their most impactful player as usual. The deep midfielder would be their number 10 and with players like Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino up front, the trio should be Liverpool’s most direct threat to any side.
Expectations
Despite all the problems, Liverpool remain the unpredictable side they always have been. Their fiery start to the start and a midseason slump is guaranteed, but they remain a positive bunch that can even win the Champions League with their aggressive approach to big games. Although they have often failed to hold on to that intensity throughout the long season.
