West Bromwich Albion had a fairly positive campaign last season as they put up a commendable show for almost the whole season before stumbling at the final frontier and thereby relinquishing the Top 8 status. Despite having limited resources at his disposal, Tony Pulis had made it possible for the Baggies and expectations have been soaring high in this season also after the 10th place finish.
Pulis has made just two signings but looking at the current squad depth, the experienced gaffer will be looking towards a few more signings to enhance his squad. Pulis has a unique way of coaching and he only wants players who would be able to thrive under his tutelage.
If reports are to be believed, the gaffer has been tracking Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen for quite a while.
The Belgian hasn’t had a very successful spell with Barcelona since his move from Arsenal back in 2014. The 31-year-old has been unable to crack a place in the starting lineup and has started just six La Liga games so far in his entire Barcelona career.
The former Arsenal defender’s frequent injury problems have been the reason behind his downfall. A defender of his stature should have been utilized more but his knack of getting injured has been an obstruction in his career.
The defender was at Roma on loan last season but failed to make a mark as he started just four games for the Italian giants. Barcelona would be happy to let him go as they would be hoping to raise some cash in the process.
At 31 years, Vermaelen might not be a top performer given the pace and physical nature of the Premier League but he could be a decent back up at the Hawthorns. Given Gareth McAuley’s age, he will certainly not be in his prime form and the Belgian would be a safe option given his huge Premier League experience.
It might not go down well with the fans as they have been expecting someone better but if they do have a look at his Arsenal career, they would be oozing with confidence. The lanky defender has spent his most eventful part of the career at the Emirates and has also chipped in with a few important goals.
He is at a crucial stage of his career and before hanging up his boots he would love to have another shot in the Premier League. West Brom are the hot favourites to break into the top eight following their stupendous form last season and Vermaelen could use this opportunity to reignite his dreadful career.
