Aston Villa were perhaps one of the favourites to win back their promotion to the Premier League last season with the kind of squad Steve Bruce had at his disposal. However, things went south in no time as a series of lacklustre performances led to the sinking feeling among everyone that it was the way a huge club eventually goes down.
Villa haven’t made any exciting additions to the squad except the unexpected arrival of John Terry. The rich history and prestige it still holds in England has helped them to retain some of their better players and Steve Bruce will have yet another go this time as they kick-off their campaign against recently relegated side Hull City.
Villa had some significant addition to their squad in January. Although it helped little then, Bruce would hope things fall into place this time.
Predicted 4-3-3 Aston Villa Line-up vs Hull City
Defence
Manchester United loanee Sam Johnstone is expected to start under the bar against the Tigers. The 24-year old had to sit out Villa’s last friendly game against Watford with a muscle injury but Bruce would expect him to be fit for this game.
The defensive flanks are expected to be taken by Neil Taylor and Alan Hutton. The defence was hardly a problem for Bruce last season as his side conceded just 48 goals in 48 games. Both Taylor and Hutton have been quite disciplined though the former Swansea City man is expected to contribute more on the counter this time.
They will be flanking central defenders John Terry and James Chester. Villa have probably the most experienced and impenetrable back line in the league and Bruce will bank heavily on it to get success. Of course, Terry would draw the loudest cheers as the former Chelsea skipper starts his Championship campaign.
Midfield
The three-man midfield is expected to feature Glenn Whelan, Henry Lansbury and Conor Hourihane. The arrival of the Irishman from Stoke City seemed to have perfectly balanced it now. With Lansbury pulling the strings in the attacking third, Whelan and Hourihane can hold the midfield effectively. With defence almost sorted out, it would be the smooth transition that remains the key.
Attack
The flanks should be taken by Gabriel Agbonlahor and Elmohamady. Elmohamady will be facing his former club, which has of course degraded since last season. He has been the only reinforcement for Villa up front. The attack will be spearheaded by Scott Hogan.
