Manchester City are one of the many clubs who are having a busy transfer window this summer. The Citizens failed to win a single trophy last season, which was incidentally the first time that has happened to Pep Guardiola in his career. So he is making sure that his side is well equipped to face the challenges next season.
The Spaniard has now spent £200m+ this summer, including two record breaking transfers but he is also looking to let go of players, who do not belong in his squad. He allowed up to six players to leave as free agents at the end of the previous season and is now looking to off-load another fringe player in Fabian Delph.
According to the Sun, Manchester City are now ready to sell the former Aston Villa midfielder this summer, to any club who is ready to meet their valuation of £14m this summer. Stoke City have already had a bid of around £10m rejected while Newcastle United are also interested. So is Pep right in letting Delph leave this summer?
Born and brought up in Bradford, England, the 27-year old is a product of the Leeds United Academy and after three years in the senior side at the Elland Road, he found a new home at the Villa Park in 2009. He did not take long to establish himself in the first team, making 112 league appearances in six years with the now-Championship outfit, before being snapped up by Manuel Pellegrini in 2015.
However, he failed to have the desired effect on the first team and has only been able to act as a backup for the likes of Fernando, Fernandinho and Yaya Toure in the senior side, also struggling with a few injuries.
A defensive midfielder by trait, the English international, who has nine caps for the national side, is known for his ability to sit back and defend, acting as the first line of defence for his side. He is strong and agile and can handle himself under pressure, with some decent dribbling abilities to show for, but having made just 24 appearances so far at the Etihad, his time at the club might be up.
Guardiola was ready to give him a chance last season but with Ilkay Gundogan expected to be back in action soon, Delph has no real place in the first team at the club. He could have been a decent backup option for Pep, but it looks like the Spaniard does not believe that the player has what it takes to thrive under him. So a move away might be the best deal for all parties involved. But do you think Delph should be given another chance by Pep?
