Newly emerged Premier League title contenders, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly weighing a move for Portuguese champions Benfica’s midfielder Ljubomir Fejsa after failing in their pursuit of Adrien Silva of Sporting Lisbon. The defensive midfielder has been one of the most successful players of late winning ten titles in his last nine seasons and is currently on the priority list of every top club in Europe.
Midfield has been Tottenham’s only position last season, where Mauricio Pochettino might have had the biggest hindrance that prevented them from winning the Premier League after fighting right till the end. The Argentine manager has taken Spurs closer than ever to a title win in the past two seasons as the Lilywhites finished third and second respectively.
And many believe that next season could just be the season for the London giants who are waiting for a league title for the last 57 years. Pochettino’s side has shown brilliant displays at the back and at the front last season as the squad managed to stop every top side in the league. And the only missing piece in Pochettino’s project remains that of an effective anchorman who can make the transition smooth and while Wanyama has been effective, the depth has been missing.
Tottenham have some of the best midfielders in the league in Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele, but they would essentially need one more player in that role who could bring in the assurance and competition over the existing players. And Fejsa looks like a perfect option to fit in at Spurs.
The Serbian international is an out and out midfielder with a more defensive inclination. His immense discipline in the game makes him adapt to any league instantly as he has wasted no time contributing significantly to successful campaigns of Partizan Belgrade, Olympiacos and his current Portuguese club.
An academy product of FK Hajduk Kula, Partizan Belgrade brought him in 2008. He played 63 times for them over three seasons scoring twice and assisting the same. His stint with Greek side Olympiakos was short but he did manage to win two titles in the league playing just 35 times over three seasons.
At Benfica, he has been playing a regular role for over five seasons winning the Liga NOS title four times, Portuguese Cup winner twice and Portuguese League Cup winner thrice. He is quite a regular for the national side too earning 23 caps.
The 28-year-old is 183cm tall, which makes him quite eligible to cope with the hassles of the Premier league. However, his injury history remains a big concern for Pochettino as the player is quite injury prone missing 14 games in the last season itself.
