Reading are plotting a move for Huddersfield Town striker Nahki Wells. The striker has been in the middle of severe speculation and has been linked with an exit.
The striker’s future at the Kirklees Stadium is in doubt after the arrival of Steve Mounie and Laurent Depoitre this summer. Reading’s hopes of getting promoted to the Premier League got dashed at the hands of Huddersfield as the Terriers got the better of them in the Championship play-off final last season and earned a license to ply their trades in the Premier League after a long gap of 45 years.
The 27-year-old was the record signing for the Terriers when he was signed from Bradford in 2014. He went on to prove his calibre for the Terriers as he played a very pivotal role last season which ended in a promotion to the Premier League.
Steve Wagner has cleared his intention if a suitable offer comes he might offload the player who netted 10 goals in the last season for the Terriers. “Everybody can see the high quality of the strikers we’ve brought in.
“This isn’t the best situation for Nahki and, of course, he’s the name who is in the market so we will listen if there is serious interest in him.”
Wells is particularly known for his blistering performance in the Championship. The Bermuda international found the net 45 times in the second tier and Reading manager Jaap Stam thinks he would bolster the attacking department of the Royals.
The former Manchester United player lost one of his key players Yann Keromorgant to an injury and has failed to lure any top players to the Madejski Stadium so far.
Reading came very close to gaining promotion but succumbed at the last hurdle and Stam wants to try their chance again in the next season. The Royals are considering a bid of around £10m which is much higher than what Huddersfield had paid for his services.
The newly promoted Premier League side have spent rigorously in the transfer market and would like to recover some of the investment. Wells has moved into the final year of his contract and Huddersfield would be looking for a decent fee to part ways with the forward.
Wells did convincingly well in the last season but couldn’t match up to his earlier performances. Bradford City is set to have a windfall if the player agrees to a move as the club had inserted a sell on clause at the time of his departure.
