Sunderland have started to make some noise in the transfer market. The Black Cats have been sitting pretty quietly in the transfer market compared to their fellow Championship rivals who have been making merry in the transfer market.
But in the last few days, the Wearside club has spent a significant amount of their transfer kitty to bring in a number of players. Sunderland have secured the signing of forward Lewis Grabban from Bournemouth on a season long loan. This is Sunderland’s fifth signing of this summer.
The 29-year old has completed his season long loan move after undergoing a medical at the Academy of Light. Simon Grayson has been looking for some quality in the side and Grabban’s addition would provide him with a much-needed depth in the side.
Eddie Howe allowed the player to leave the Vitality Stadium. This was his second stint with the club as he had earlier plied his trade for the club from 2012-2014.
Grabban joined Norwich from Bournemouth in 2014 but his impressive performance compelled the club to spend a hefty amount of £7m to bring him back. But his second spell turned out to be a pretty ordinary one as he had fallen behind when compared to the other forwards available at the Vitality Stadium.
He was shipped to Reading last season and had a pretty eventful campaign guiding the Royals to the Championship Playoffs final as he racked up three goals in his 16 appearances. But they faced defeat at the hands of Huddersfield Town who earned the status of a Premier League team after defeating them in the tie-breaker.
Grabban came up through the ranks of the Crystal Palace academy but couldn’t make any difference in the senior setup as he featured only 11 times for the Eagles. In Grabban, Sunderland are getting a very intelligent goal scorer who knows the pros and cons of the Championship and could uplift the side with his goal scoring ability.
With Jermain Defoe’s departure, Simon Grayson needs some adequate reinforcements in the forward line and Grabban could provide healthy competition to James Vaughan, Josh Maja and Joel Asoro.
Grabban sounded delighted after signing for the Black Cats. “The size of the club and its history attracted me, as well the manager. It’s a good opportunity for me.”
Sunderland would be pushing for an immediate promotion to the Premier League It remains to be seen how the new manager prefers to use him in the upcoming season.
