Manchester City have already started revamping their squad for the next season, especially their defence and have brought in a number of defenders for the next term, the latest being the French full back Benjamin Mendy from the Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco for the next term. However, they are yet to bring in a new centre back, who might be a good partner for Vincent Kompany at the heart of the defence in the next season.
The Citizens’ coach Pep Guardiola is well aware of the fact that they are going to need a good player in the centre of their defence to avoid any loopholes. Though the former Premier League Champions have John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi at their disposal, it is imperative for them to bring in another central defender who can give them stability in the backline with his physical presence.
Three players whom Guardiola can bring into his team for the next season to stabilise the City defence, which has been area of problem for them in the last term are as follows-
Virgil Van Dijk-
The Dutch defender has been a top target for almost all the big name clubs in the summer transfer window, including the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool. The player has reportedly asked to leave the South Coast club and has been ordered by the team management to train alone. This might be the perfect opportunity for Manchester City to bid for the player and get him on the side for the next term.
Jerome Boateng-
The German centre back has been a transfer target for the defending Premier League champions Chelsea and might make his way back into the Premier League for a second stint. The Citizens, however, can look to hijack the deal and bid to bring him back at the Etihad Stadium, where he spent a rather disappointing season during the 2010-11 campaign making only 24 appearances.
Inigo Martinez-
The Spanish defender, who was in good form in the last term, has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium for the next term. The centre back, who currently plays for the Spanish La Liga outfit Real Sociedad, might join the Citizens subject to a £27 million transfer deal in the forthcoming season. A potential target for the Catalan giants Barcelona as well, Martinez can turn out to be a good defensive option for City in the coming seasons.
