It’s the dawn of a new era at the Elland Road under one of the best young managers in English football, Garry Monk. After plenty of years of sheer disappointment for the Whites, the fans are high with optimism about the future of the club under Monk. Although the 30-year-old had the worst possible start to his managerial career with Leeds with two back to back defeats against QPR and Birmingham, a draw against Fulham and a win against last season’s play-off finalists Sheffield Wednesday have got them right back on track and Leeds look all set to put an end to all their miseries.
Monk has made as many as ten signings this summer but an area which is still calling for reinforcements is defence. The Whites went into the summer knowing they had to strengthen their woeful defence and Monk managed to solidify his backline by signing three defenders in the form of Luke Ayling, Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson.
According to The Mirror, Leeds United have enquired about signing Norwich City centre-back Sebastien Bassong but will face a stern competition from Championship rivals Fulham. Although the Cottagers will hold the upper hand for the Cameroonian’s signature thanks with Bassong’s former manager at Watford Slavisa Jokanovic in charge, Leeds can still pull off the deal thanks to Garry Monk’s charisma.
Bassong is a strong and experienced defender who can add a lot to the Leeds backline. With plenty of Premier League experience while playing for clubs like Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City, Bassong is a big upgrade on either Sol Bamba and Liam Cooper who have failed to impress at the club in recent years.
With a frame of 6’2”, Bassong is a menace in the air. With his strong physique, he can outmuscle attackers and has a decent pace in his locker to cover plenty of ground. The Cameroonian international will be a massive addition to Leeds both on and off the pitch with the experience he possesses.
The 30-year-old desperately needs a move now after going out of favour at Carrow Road under Alex Neil. Leeds United, despite all their poor showings in the last few seasons, are one of the most reputed clubs in England and a move to Elland Road makes sense from the player’s point of view as well.
