Scottish Premiership outfit, Rangers, have been thoroughly indulged in the summer transfer window under the stewardship of Pedro Caixinha who will embark upon his first full season with the Light Blues. The Glasgow based outfit have completed as many as nine signings, namely, Bruno Alves, Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Fabio Cardoso, Dalcio, Carlos Pena, Daniel Candeias, Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera but apparently, they are in no mood to stop their recruitments.
If the latest reports are to be believed, the Gers are gearing up to lure Brighton & Hove Albion winger, Jamie Murphy, in order to beef up the quality of their attacking midfield region. However, the Seagulls have slapped a hefty price tag of £4million on his collar and with their arch rivals, Celtic, also believed to be interested, Rangers do need to first assess the qualities he would bring with himself to the Ibrox Stadium and then to take the requisite steps to enable him to ply his trade in the Scottish football once again.
The 27-year-old flattered to deceive in the Championship under the tutelage of Chris Hughton. In 35 appearances, Murphy banged in 2 goals and registered 3 assists in the English second division last term. Having been promoted, Brighton would be inclined for better prospects and might be tempted to strike him off their books if a right deal comes along. However, it would be absurd to state that he was sluggish and frankly speaking, he was more of a utility player and his goal scoring record in the past might interest Caixinha.
Murphy emerged through the youth ranks of Clyde and Motherwell, and eventually paved his way to the senior side of the latter, whilst which he carved a name for himself for many years. Subsequent moves to Sheffield United and Albion resulted in fairly productive outputs and owing to Albion’s promotion to the English top division, his stocks rose considerably. The question of whether he is worth the amount of the aforesaid fee or not is, however, the point to be thought and decided upon.
The Scot is quite a versatile player who could be penciled on the left wing, left side of the midfield, central attacking midfield slot or even up front as a striker. While he doesn’t cater to the defensively duties very well, it must be noted that his merits include holding the ball well, his knack to make something happen in the final third and the visible tendency to score goals. For the Teddy Bears, finding the back of the net was a headache last season, and with Murphy in their arsenal, they might be a bit relieved in this aspect.
