The summer transfer market is off to a flier with top clubs across Europe making some high profile transfers already. However, the latest story doing the rounds that is blowing everyone’s mind takes the insanity in the transfer market to a new height.
According to reports, Catalan giants Barcelona have reportedly accepted a €222m bid for Brazilian international Neymar Jr from French side Paris Saint Germain.
The report claims that Unai Emery has successfully persuaded the club to spend big on the winger and that Neymar will finalise a move to Ligue 1 in the upcoming days. However, there is no official word about this story from either camp but is Neymar worth the €222m? Should any club think about spending as much on the 25-year old?
Born and brought up in Brazil, Neymar is a product of the Santos Academy in Brazil, which has given the world of football, some of the finest players ever seen. He made his international debut for Brazil at the age of 18 and has already won an Olympic gold with his national side recently, making 77 appearances at just 25 years of age.
He has been at the Camp Nou since 2013 and has scored 68 goals, picking up 52 assists in just 123 La Liga outings, standing as one of the most productive players at the moment in Europe. Though not his best season, Neymar picked up 20 goals and 27 assists in the previous campaign and is one of the most important players for Barcelona in their plans for the future.
At his age, he is going to help the club stay at the top of Europe for years to come and it comes as a surprise that they are even willing to negotiate a deal to sell him. But after a managerial change at the helm this summer, Barca are a bit unsettled and could do with the financial windfall Neymar will give them if he quits the club.
So this is probably the best time for any club to make a move on Neymar and PSG seem to have taken the first step. There are not many teams in Europe who will even think about getting together €200m+ for one signing but beyond doubt, Neymar’s technical ability and his experience at the highest level, are well worth the price. He can win games on his own, like he did against PSG in the famous Champions League comeback last season and surely, the amount spent on him will be worth the risk.
