Arsene Wenger will not be happy with the way his side crashed out of Champions League qualification for the first time in his stint at the Emirates. But he is already busy making sure that this does not happen again by adding some of the finest players in world football to the squad this summer.
The Gunners have already completed the signing of Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac for the next season but it looks like they will lose their talisman from the previous season Alexis Sanchez, who is yet to put pen to paper in a new deal at the Emirates. This has seen Wenger scout for ore attacking options and the latest name linked with a move to London is Polish international, Robert Lewandowski.
A thorn in the Arsenal skin almost every time they face German giants Bayern Munich, Lewandowski stands as one of the best strikers in world football at the moment, if not the best. At 28, he is in his prime as a footballer and is the first choice for club and country at the moment but reports claim that Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are all interested in bringing him to England this summer. But is he a necessity for Arsenal?
The Gunners have already signed Lacazette as the first choice striker for the next season. The likes of Danny Welbeck, Olivier Giroud and Lucas Perez are all backup options for Wenger and though he may lose one of those names in the summer, he still have enough to cover this role for the entire season.
However, they need to find a cover for the winger’s position, to fill the void left by Sanchez when he leaves and Lewandowski does not fill that gap by any means. However, what the Pole does add to the squad at the Emirates is his goal scoring prowess.
An excellent finisher, tailor-made for the English game, Lewandowski’s 55 goals and six assists in the previous season across all competitions, for club and country and will genuinely walk into any squad in Europe. At the Emirates, he could be used as the main striker while Lacazette could act as the secondary striker.
This will allow Wenger to use a 3-4-1-2 variant of the 3-4-3 system he used to good effect late last season. This will mean that Arsenal have one of the best attacks in the country and could lift them back to the top. However, ‘Lewa’ is expected cost quite a hefty sum and it is to be seen if Wenger is happy spending as much on another striker.
