Manchester United are ready to pounce on Kasper Schmeichel if David De Gea leaves Old Trafford. According to some reports, Real Madrid might renew their interest with a new bid very soon and it would be very difficult for United to fend off their interest this time.
Madrid’s interest in the Spanish shot stopper is not new as they have raided the Old Trafford outfit again and again. But United’s determination to keep their number one keeper has kept the Spanish giants at bay until now.
Madrid had a lot of options in the transfer market as they have been hunting a new number one to replace Keylor Navas between the sticks. The Costa Rican international had an excellent season having won the Champions League and La Liga.
But Florentino Perez feels that the 30-year-old hasn’t been at his top form and thus Los Blancos should find a new keeper to succeed him. Real had hoped they would be able to lure Italian sensation Gianluigi Donnarumma of AC Milan but the Italian international turned his back after inking a new deal to extend his stay at the San Siro.
The Alvaro Morata saga is still fresh in Jose Mourinho’s mind and he would try his best to keep the Spanish international at the club. Mourinho had tried his best to bring the forward to the club and even agreed to terms with the player.
But Madrid’s continuous hardball over the transfer fee forced United to shift their attention to Romelu Lukaku who signed for the Red Devils a few days ago from Everton.
Schmeichel has established himself as one of the top keepers in the Premier League currently. The 30-year-old already has a Premier League medal in his tally and would like to add to it if Jose Mourinho comes calling.
Incidentally, the Danish has an indirect relation with the Manchester based outfit. Schmeichel’s father Peter Schmeichel was one of the best keepers in the world during the Alex Ferguson reign.
We have seen some top class goal keepers with the likes of Edwin Van Der Sar, Fabian Barthez and Peter Schmeichel at Old Trafford and junior Schmeichel could emulate his father’s feat at the club.
The Danish international would command a fee in the region of £30m considering his present contract situation. The Leicester City keeper signed fresh terms after the Foxes’ maiden Premier League triumph.
United are pretty sure about their choice and Schmeichel would be a prized scalp for them.
