Derby County are planning a reunion with Tom Huddlestone as they are ready to trigger his release clause which is reportedly in the range of £2m. Since Hull City got relegated last season, his future has been up in the air and a number of clubs have been trying to rope in the experienced midfielder.
The ex Spurs midfielder came through the Rams Academy before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. He spent a significant period at the White Hart Lane and has been pretty successful with the North Londoners.
He had given a good account of himself at the KCOM Stadium but could be on his way to the Pride Park Stadium. The midfield enforcer had a pretty decent season but couldn’t stop the demotion of the Tigers.
With the arrival of Leonid Slutsky along with his new ideas, Huddlestone could see his game time drastically reduced so it would be better for him to make a move away from the club. He is still regarded as one of the better utility players in the game so it won’t take much time for him to get back in the groove with the Rams.
Derby boss Gary Rowett has been very busy in the transfer market accumulating players for his side as he is aiming to get ready for the promotional battle. A number of clubs including Newcastle United are also monitoring the 30-year old as Rafa Benitez has been trying to add some quality to his midfield.
The 30-year-old midfielder can act as an anchorman and can provide the defensive cover that is hugely necessary to survive and perform in the Championship. Huddlestone has good knowledge of the English second tier so he could help the Rams with his valuable inputs.
Birmingham City are also planning to rope in the player as Harry Redknapp is very keen to bolster his team before the next season. Having managed him at the White Hart Lane, the manager knows the pros and cons of the player and he wants to work with the player again.
Spending £2m on a player would be a good business and especially a player who knows the club’s philosophy very well. Huddlestone would love to be a part of Rowett’s side as he started his playing career at the club.
A return to the Premier League might sound very ambitious but if the Rams manage to convince the player, they might end up bringing the player to the Pride Park Stadium.
