Arsenal’s uncharacteristic transfer activities this summer isn’t a one-way street. The North London club is looking to offload quite some of their players to clear up their wage structure as the club aims to bring in a string of big arrivals for the first time in almost over a decade.
Among the ones expected to leave, Gibb’s name features prominently. The English full-back has never really managed to reach the height he was expected to, and despite Wenger keeping faith in him for over nine years, he has failed to impress.
The London-born defender was brought in as a 14-year-old from MK Dons back in 2004. And barring a loan stint with Norwich City, Gibbs has largely been in the club playing under the likes of Gael Clichy, Nacho Monreal and more.
In over 200 games for the Gunners, Gibbs has managed six goals and 25 assists. Making his debut for the Three Lions back in 2010, he has been going down the pecking order as he has managed just 10 caps since then. Wenger has made it quite clear that he won’t be in his plans next season by omitting him from their pre-season tour to Australia.
However, Gibbs’ quality is undeniable and he could be a real help for some of the smaller clubs in the Premier League. Here are 3 possible destinations-
Newcastle United
The Magpies have been linked with almost every other player this summer with Rafael Benitez finding it difficult to land most of his targets. Paul Dummett remains their only feasible option on the left defensive flank, as Achraf Lazaar, who arrived from Serie A side Palermo last summer, is likely to leave owing to irregular chances in the Championship last season. And Gibbs could be a good addition, given his immense experience at the highest level. There have also been reports of Benitez targeting Gibbs.
West Ham United
The Hammers find themselves in the same position as they did last summer. With Slaven Bilic enduring a nightmarish season last campaign that saw the London side reeling under poor form and injury crisis, the Croat manager is determined to make next season count. And an addition like Gibbs could strengthen their back line which has already added Jose Fonte last winter. Bilic prefers three at the back setup occasionally, which would also suit Gibbs.
Chelsea
It is very much possible that the English full-back changes camp in the turmoil. Antonio Conte has been in desperate need of a left-back after Marcos Alonso was left with no backup. His occasional inconsistency even cost the London side some big games. Now with them playing in Europe, it has become all the more essential they get someone to take up the place as and when needed. Their pursuit of Alex Sandro has been frustrating so far.
