If recent reports are to be believed, Tottenham Hotspur are now leading the race for German’s young sensation Max Meyer in the cut-throat race with Liverpool. The Lilywhites have had a relatively underwhelming transfer season so far, with no major signing announced amidst all the noise created by the other title contenders.
It is true that Mauricio Pochettino’s available squad forces him to look for little reinforcements in the recent future and their previous decent league finish even more so but the unpredictability of the Premier League can smash one’s convictions into pieces. Pochettino was immensely blessed to experience a largely injury free season last term, which didn’t see their star players out for long at any point in time; but it could take just one match for that to happen.
And Spurs would definitely need more beefing up in their midfield which remains their main source of strength over other sides in the league. Spurs have proved to be a mining ground for young talents, who have performed at the highest level. In Dele Alli, Heung Min-Son and Harry Winks, Premier League has some of the best talents across Europe and the Schalke man is deserving of getting a place alongside them.
The 21-year-old has been one of Bundesliga’s more exciting talents for the past two seasons, and although he had a poor campaign with Die Konigsblauen last season, he made up for it by his brilliant displays for Germany in the Under-21 European Championship. The Oberhausen-born was a star performer in the competition and even got himself selected in the team of the tournament.
The Tottenham boss had a bad buy in Moussa Sissoko in the attacking midfield position and Eric Lamela’s frustrating stretches of injuries have tested Pochettino’s patience for long. If the right offer comes, the players could well see themselves parting ways with the North London club.
Reportedly, the player is available for an affordable price of £17 million and to Spurs’ fortune, has already given hints of not willing to extend his contract with the club as he is already in his final 12 months.
A central midfielder by nature, Meyer can play on the wings as well, much like Spurs’ star midfielder Christian Eriksen. Having terrific composure on the ball, his pace makes him a brilliant option to have in the attacking third. Spurs already have defensive minded players in the midfield like Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama and Meyer’s addition could bring the perfect balance.
Although Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s influence in the Bundesliga could be a stumbling block for them, their current stature and stability would be a huge role in this transfer.
