Swansea City have held talks with Las Palmas for the signing of midfielder Roque Mesa. Paul Clement is yet to sign a new player this summer and the midfielder could be the first addition for the Swans.
Mesa has been one of the most famed playmakers in the La Liga and has attracted a number of suitors before. Both AS Roma and Sevilla were desperate for the midfielder but it seems Swansea have won the battle as according to some reports Las Palmas have agreed to a €13m fee and negotiations are on regarding a few details of the deal.
Mesa has been in demand and was the subject of a bid from Sevilla last year. But the Spanish club rejected the offer in a bid to garner a large sum for the player and it seems they were right in turning down the move as they are going to pocket a much bigger fee from the deal.
Swansea flirted with the relegation throughout the season and saved the drop by some last ditch efforts. Having struggled in the last season, Clement is keen to rectify some positions with midfield being the number one priority.
Swansea have cleared their books by releasing some of the players as Clement has already started rebuilding the squad. The performances of Ki and Jack Cork were very poor as Clement often had to scratch his head when it came to picking his starting lineup.
Mesa has been the passing master of the La Liga as he distributed a mammoth 2267 passes with accuracy. Sevilla’s Steven Nzonzi is the only player ahead of him. His record speaks for himself and landing him at the Liberty Stadium would be a smashing deal. Mesa can be deployed in the centre of the park or in the anchor role. He has been performing both roles with equal precision and his style has been often compared with former midfield maestro Xavi.
His ideal position would be sitting deep as his ability to thwart the opponents play can be utilised largely from that position. Clement knows that he is getting a gem in a bargain deal so he should opt to build a team around the player.
A product of the Levante Academy, the 28-year-old could be the creative playmaker that Clement has been looking for. Swansea are gearing up for the new season and his ability in the middle of the park could draw raptures from the Liberty Stadium.
