A PR Stunt? Rangers Chairman Belittles Celtic’s Achievements: Twitter Responds Fittingly

Celtic FC, the Scottish heavyweights, have been the most successful Premiership outfit of current time with six successive league triumphs and enjoyed an ‘unbeaten’ domestic campaign under former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers clinching a domestic ‘treble’. Scottish Premiership has been typically a ‘one-sided affair’ lately with no real competition for the Hoops and their age-old rival Rangers Football Club’s demotion to the fourth tier made things easier for them. The Gers, however, were finally back in top tier last year following four seasons of absence and are rejuvenated once more to draw a conclusion to Celtic’s dominance.

The unstoppable Celtic are eyeing their seventh SPFL title and targeting ten in a row in the longer run. But Rangers’ chairman Dave King had a ludicrous explanation to counter that.

“My response is that Celtic have got two in a row at this point in time. So they need to win another eight to get to ten. Do I think there’s any chance of them getting another eight? I don’t think there’s any chance of them doing that before us winning another league title.”

Fans over Twitter reacted to his statement and there have been mixed reactions from the supporters.

King has praised Pedro Caixinha, the Gers’ boss, for his shrewd signings and revealed there will be more incoming during summer. The Scottish-born, South Africa-based businessman has won his battle against English business tycoon Mike Ashley who has announced the selling of his club shares on Friday and although his merchandise agreement was renegotiated midweek, it will run out within 12 months and Ashley, the Sports Direct owner who was allegedly using club’s popularity and influence to feed his retail company, will have no direct involvement with Rangers anymore. Ashley’s departure is an indication of club’s ascent towards the top following years of turmoil and now King’s absurd claims might be a PR stunt to charge the fan-base up and reignite their fierce rivalry.

The Celtic fans, however, took a dig at him via Twitter.

A few of those are hysterical as well.

Rangers fans, meanwhile, have poured their gratitude for their chairman.

Only time will tell whether Rangers can halt their rivals and regain their supremacy in Old Firm derbies, the excitement regarding 2017-18 Scottish Premiership title has already been lit up by Dave King.
