Southampton have not been in the best of forms in the last season, mostly due to the disappointing performances of their attack and also owing to the injury scares to a number of their key players. The Saints are now looking to get a head start next term and make it a good one, and are eyeing a number of players to revamp their current side for the new season.
One of the names on the top of the priority list for the South Coast club is the Tottenham Hotspur outcast Kevin Wimmer, who has failed to make his place permanent in the starting line-up since his arrival at White Hart Lane in 2015 from German Bundesliga club FC Cologne. However, it might be a detriment for the Saints to bag the Austrian in the next season, given his hefty price tag of £20 million slammed by the Spurs.
The centre-back has been spending most of the last two seasons out on the sidelines, given the Belgian duo of Jon Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld performing exceptionally well in the heart of the defence for the North London club for the last few seasons.
However, he has been attracting interests from a number of clubs from the Premier League, given his performance in the limited amount of opportunities that he has been handed so far by his club coach Mauricio Pochettino over the past two seasons.
Southampton have been through a lot in the recent times regarding the controversy circling their ace defender Virgil van Dijk, who has been looked up as a firm favourite by a number of clubs including the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool. The South Coast club registered an official complaint with the English FA regarding the Merseyside club attempting to lure their prized possession into a deal without their recognition, for which Liverpool had to apologise publicly.
In case Kevin Wimmer comes into the South Coast club in the next season, he will be considered to be a partner for the influential Dutch centre-back rather than his replacement. It is more likely for the Austrian to replace the Portuguese centre-back Jose Fonte, whose departure to West Ham United during the January transfer window has left a big void in the Saints’ backline and they are looking to bring in the right replacement for him.
Southampton are meanwhile quite confident to keep hold of Van Dijk, given his £70 million price tag that very few clubs will be willing to pay.
