Amidst much speculation, Manchester United have launched a bid of £30m for Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo. Jose Mourinho has earmarked the player as his next recruit at the Old Trafford this summer.
Jose Mourinho has set a few targets in this transfer window to induce them to this Manchester United side. United managed to nail a place in the Champions League after winning the Europa League but their performance was not up to the mark last season especially domestically.
They struggled in the Premier League heavily and now have finished outside of the top four for two consecutive years. Mourinho needs to address this concern and that’s why he wants to add a sufficient number of signings to make United at par with the other European heavyweights.
Semedo has been long linked with the Red Devils but there hadn’t been any concrete response from United. But this time, the English outfit are pretty confident as Jose Mourinho might raid Benfica for the second time.
United recently signed Victor Lindelof from Benfica and Semedo could be the next entrant at the Old Trafford. Barcelona are also interested in the player as he was supposed to be the replacement of Dani Alves. Right back has been a problem for the Catalans and Semedo had been heralded as the next player to arrive at the Nou Camp and take up the right back position.
But the Spanish giants were put off by the quoted price of Benfica and now they have stepped back from the negotiations. So it could be a clear path for United to bring the player to Manchester.
United currently have Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian in this area. But Valencia has turned 31 and although he is known for his agility and pace, age could play a spoilsport. Darmian mostly slotted in as a backup to Luke Shaw on the left side and has done tremendously well. So there is a slight possibility that the gaffer might opt to start him as a left back next season so an alternate option would be needed for the upcoming season.
Semedo burst onto the scene in 2015 and has been a revelation for the Portuguese club. Benfica have produced a number of talented potentials in the last few seasons and Semedo have been one of them.
Semedo is an energetic right back with sheer pace and energy and he would bring a lot of positivity to the Old Trafford.
