Jurgen Klopp has made some smart addition to his Liverpool side in his first transfer window at Anfield, but he is now aiming higher and wants some of the best players in Europe to play for Liverpool next season. A number of star players have been linked with a move to Liverpool recently and one player is now back on the radar of the English club is Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez.
According to rumors from the Daily Mail, Liverpool have retained their interest in the former PFA player of the year for a move this summer. The Reds were linked with a move for the Algerian before the start of the previous season but Klopp decided to spend on Sadio Mane, who turned out to be the top goal scorer for the club last season.
And this season as well, Mahrez is not the first choice transfer target for Klopp as he is looking at the likes of Mohamed Salah and Emre Mor to add to his attacking lineup. The Egyptian is close than ever to a move to Anfield while Mor could be tempted so where does Mahrez fit in?
The 27-year old has great pace and skill to go with a calm head on his shoulder. He is an excellent dribbler and en even better finisher but he has not been able to carry his form from the title winning campaign to the previous one, where he only managed ten goals and seven assists all season for the Foxes.
He did show glimpses of what he can do in what was a disappointing campaign at the King Power and it is hard to see Liverpool decide on being happy with Mahrez as the addition to their attack.
The Reds have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in more than three years and will need all the depth they can acquire to be ready for all the challenges that may come their way next season.
Mahrez will be a decent backup but at £40m, he is not someone who is value for money for the Reds. His experience in the Premier League could be definitely helpful and the lack of width in Liverpool’s attack makes him an attractive target but Liverpool will look to sign a more dynamic payer, alongside Mane and Salah to play on the wings next season. Surely, Mahrez should have no place at Anfield, especially if he costs around £40m.
