Despite great expectations, Manchester City’s season has not been satisfactory. The arrival of Pep Guardiola left a deep impression on the City supporters as they were hoping to see some breathtaking football to break the barrier. They did start well winning their first ten games in all competitions, but from there, an erratic season began.
Guardiola’s big decision to go all out for ex-Barcelona keeper Claudio Bravo seemed to have hampered their chances. The Chilean international endured a very tough campaign as he took too much time to get accustomed to the English style of play. The Spanish gaffer had to deploy Willy Caballero as Bravo was looking short of confidence.
With the squad he had at his disposal, Guardiola should have been aiming for the Premier League title. But some very poor results dashed their hopes as this is the first time the Spaniard ended a season without winning any trophy.
Questions have been asked if Guardiola’s tactics are fit for the Premier League and the Spaniard will not have too many chances to prove his credentials. So here are three things he needs to do to lift the title next season:
Infusion Of New Players
City will feel the need to sign a centre-back who would at least give them solidity at the back. Vincent Kompany still has the ability in him to hold the fort on his own but he needs to have a solid defender alongside. Pep also needs to step up his right back section. Both Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna left the club and the search for a right back will be one of his priorities this summer.
Bringing a new midfielder to the Etihad will also make them stronger. The manager have to wait a bit longer to call on to llkay Gundogan and a strong solid physical presence in the centre of the pitch could also be a priority for the next campaign.
More Emphasis On Attack
City have a young bunch of attackers with the likes of Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus and Pep needs to make sure he utilises the player to their full potential. A certain Sergio Aguero can be very dangerous on his day and Guardiola must retain him at any cost.
Maintain Consistency
City looked very ruthless at the end of the previous season but they will have to maintain the form throughout the next campaign to have a shot at the title. They cannot afford any mistakes as they did in the last season. They have been unlucky with injuries which disrupted their campaign. But these things do happen and Pep has to be ready for every situation.
