Manchester United have a busy summer ahead of them and thankfully they have the Champions League to look forward to. This will allow Jose Mourinho to lure some of the best talents in the world to the club this summer, but that will also mean that a few players at the club will be axed. One player who seems certain to go is skipper Wayne Rooney.
The highest goal scorer for the club in its history, Rooney, is also one of the highest-paid players at the club at the moment and Mourinho seems to believe that offloading him will not just reduce the burden on the club but will also help them to free up space for a new buy. Is it the right approach to this situation? Should United really let Rooney go?
The 31-year old was linked with an exit last summer and also in January but it never looked like he would be sold in a hurry. But with Mourinho planning an overhaul this summer, this might be the right time to get rid of him, if they are looking to.
Hit by injuries and loss of form, Rooney has not been able to find a regular first team place under Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho and has only been a squad player for the last couple of seasons. He is one of the highest earners in the whole of England and even with his record, he had to justify his earnings.
As crazy as selling your club’s all-time top goalscorer sounds, Manchester United seem to be better off without the English skipper next season. Rooney was only used regularly after United had no chance to finish in the top-4 and though he showed decent form, it is unlikely that he will get such game time next season.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be adequately replaced while Juan Mata might get another chance. So, United need to offload an attacker, to add a new face and Rooney is the only player who fits the bill, for the axe. At 31, he may still sparkle elsewhere in the Premier League but Mourinho needs players at their peak to establish United as a European superpower once again and Rooney hardly fits there.
Loyalty to the club will earn him a year but many might argue that the season first under Mourinho was his final chance and that it is time for him to go. But do you think it is already time for United to get rid of a legend of their club?
