Manchester United are on the verge of signing Victor Lindelof from Benfica. If sources are to be believed, the Swedish international who is right now with his country for international duty will undergo a medical in the coming days. Lindelof could be the first of many as United are expected to make a number of signings as a part of Jose Mourinho’s squad overhaul.
The central defender was due to join in the winter transfer window after a deal was almost finalised but due to some reason the move didn’t materialise but this time the Red Devils are handling the matter quite delicately and the deal is expected to be wrapped up in a couple of days.
Mourinho is already a fan of the player who has established himself pretty beautifully but it was Zlatan Ibrahimovic who convinced the United hierarchy to make a move for the defender. The 22-year-old is Zlatan’s fellow countryman and the lanky forward believes he has all the materials to become a future superstar. “I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing.”
A fee of £35m has been agreed between the two clubs and Lindelof is expected to join the club within the next week. He already has earned 22 caps for his country at this age and has a number of trophies under his belt.
A pretty unknown name, Lindelof started his career at IK Franke. He moved to Benfica in 2014 but had to wait a little bit to get it going in the starting lineup. He was also very close to securing a move to Middlesbrough couple of years ago but the deal went off.
Blessed with acute pace and severe aerial presence, Lindelof is a perfect player for Mourinho. The Portuguese gaffer had already brought Eric Bailly to the Old Trafford from Villarreal and the arrival of Lindelof would tighten their defence more supremely.
Lindelof is expected to be in the starting lineup when Sweden will take on Norway in a World Cup Qualifier and if reports are to be believed he will be heading straight to Manchester to complete the deal.
The defender has already told his close friends about this move and is very excited to join the club. A contract of five years will be offered to the player as Jose Mourinho is aiming to kickstart the new season in overwhelming fashion.
