Southampton are weighing their possibilities to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo. This is likely related to a movement regarding Virgil Van Dijk’s departure as the former Celtic star is reportedly considering a move outside the club. Claude Puel would be looking to rejig the back line and Semedo could be that new entrant at the St Mary’s.
Southampton are on the verge of losing their second defender after losing Jose Fonte to West Ham United in January. The Portuguese defender made his way to the London Stadium and it seems Van Dijk could soon follow suit but to another club.
Semedo is a very exciting prospect and has been pursued by a number of clubs. The Portuguese U-21 international has impressed for the Portuguese club and the Saints are ready to meet his £12.5m release price.
The only possible hindrance in the transfer could be Newcastle United’s interference in the move. The newly promoted side has been hunting a defender who would be a suitable match for the Premier League sides. Rafa Benitez would be adamant to add some new faces to provide that much-needed balance and he thinks Semedo could be a good investment.
Virgil Van Dijk’s transfer could be a blessing in disguise because if the Saints can pull this transfer it could prove to be a big bargain as Semedo’s value is slated to rise in the upcoming years and £12.5m would be a sound investment for him. Southampton had their scouts present on a number of times to watch him play and an offer is imminent for the defender.
Semedo is not yet accustomed with the pros and cons of the Premier League and it might be a bit early for him to get comfortable with the pace and environment of Premier League. He has a much higher release clause in his contract but Claude Puel’s side can get him for a much cheaper amount.
Claude Puel’s future is still in jeopardy as his future will be decided soon. Should he stay Semedo could be a part of his plans as the Portuguese youngster will partner Maya Yoshida in the heart of the Saints defence.
It remains to be seen how the Saints approach this move. With the team failing to build on their success of the last season, there is a sense of discontent at St.Mary’s and a couple of additions to the team will let the fans and the staff breathe a little easy.
But Villareal might finally win the race to sign the in-demand defender.
