Tottenham Hotspur, this season’s runners-up in the Premier League, are currently in unrest over the future of their regular right-back Kyle Walker. The England international’s relationship with their Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino has deteriorated of late, with the latter picking Walker’s compatriot Kevin Trippier to start in the right back position in their recent matches at the end of the season.
As per sources, Manchester City is monitoring the situation very closely. Speculations are rife that Walker might leave White Hart Lane in the summer to join The Citizens. As a result, Tottenham is looking to bring in someone new into that position for the next season. Reports suggest that the Bournemouth right back Adam Smith is on their radar, who was let out of White Hart Lane to join the Cherries in 2014.
Adam Smith has been a mainstay in the defence for Bournemouth and is one of the most highly rated right backs in the Premier League at the moment. Eddie Howe, the manager of Bournemouth, is much dependent on his side’s prized possession and it will be quite hard for him to do without Smith if he leaves Dean Court during the next transfer window.
Smith has made 34 appearances for The Cherries so far and has played a pivotal role in holding the defence for them. He also has been going up the field on occasions to ensure a regular supply of crosses into the attacking third. He has laid off assists for his teammates on five occasions and has scored one goal himself this season.
The 26-year-old right back is a product of the Tottenham Hotspurs Academy and started his career with them. However, he was handed only one start in the six years he spent at the Lane, having been let out for the rest of the time on loan stints with seven different clubs including Bournemouth.
Smith spent the 2010-11 season at Bournemouth on loan. He made a comeback to join them as a full-time player in the year 2014 and has since been an integral part of the team in the Premier League.
His brilliant show of skills in the backline for The Cherries has attracted the attention of the Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino, who is known for his benevolent guidance to bring the best out of youngsters and turn them into top class players. If Smith is brought back into the Tottenham side, he is sure to benefit under his tutelage. But is he the right man to replace Kyle Walker?
