Newcastle United have clinched promotion and have made their way back into the Premier League after spending one season in the Championship. They came out to be the eventual winners this term and are looking to make a mark in the Premier League next season as well.
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is an experienced customer in the Premier League having been with the Merseyside club Liverpool and is well aware of the fact that he will have to face some of the biggest teams in English as well as European football in the next season, and will need a strong enough team to take on the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and defending champions Chelsea.
The Spaniard is leading the charge to find the right players to boost his team’s chances in the next season and is on the task of replacing a number of his players with experienced customers from the English Premier League. One such player is Willy Caballero, who has been shown the door by Manchester City after a dismal season which saw them win no silverwares this term.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper has been playing for City in the Premier League since 2014 but has been used as a backup for most of the time throughout his stay at the Etihad Stadium. First Joe Hart and now Claudio Bravo have adorned the post of the primary shot stopper for the Citizens, while the veteran had to play second fiddle to them till date.
With the option of leaving the club, as there has been no contract extension for the 35-year old by the Citizens, Caballero is looking to make a move to another team to continue his career between the sticks. The Magpies seem to be well aware of the fact and is looking to bring him into the squad to strengthen it for the next season.
Reportedly, Benitez is also plotting to bring in his former colleague from Napoli, Pepe Reina to make him play between the sticks for Newcastle United. However, it is very much unlikely that the goalkeeper will be given the grant to leave his current club and make a move back to the Premier League, where he spent a chunk of his career with Liverpool under the tutelage of his compatriot Benitez.
Benitez already has four goalkeepers at his disposal, them being Tim Krul, Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Matz Sels, at least two of whom might be offloaded in case Caballero is brought into the team this summer.
