Mauricio Pochettino is one of the smartest managers in the transfer window as he usually refuses to spend on players just to increase the number. Though he spent on an odd player like Moussa Sissoko, Pochettino has a recruitment system that is working wonders at the moment and the latest name that he wants to the White Hart Lane is Maximilian Philipp.
The versatile attacker, who has been in superb form this season for German side SC Freiburg is now a wanted player in the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are seriously considering a move for the 23-year old and reports suggest that Philipp is happy in Germany at the moment. However, Pochettino believes that he is the right man for his side and is ready to make a £10m bid for his services.
The Bundesliga outfit values him at a largely higher price but a few negotiations can help Spurs land the star at a decent price, but is he what the Spurs need at the moment?
With nine goals and three assists in the Bundesliga this season, the Germany U21 international is one of the many youngsters in the country that are waiting for their chance at the highest level. A genuine attacker with a decent eye for goal, the 23-year old is an excellent finisher and can dribble past opponents with ease.
For most of the season, Philipp has played as the second fiddle to Freiburg’s Florian Niederlechner and his performances show that he is at his best playing in that role. He is not the strongest in the air and cannot act as a playmaker but he can play on the shoulder of the opponent backline to try and free up some space for his teammates.
His defensive contributions are one of his biggest attractions, his finishing being the biggest and Pochettino will love to use him alongside Harry Kane next season. It is hard to see him lead the attack for Spurs regularly next season even when Kane is absent but is a player who can definitely add some goals to the side.
The Spurs need a backup for Harry Kane, someone who can walk in and start scoring goals whenever called upon. The Freiburg star fits the bill but if he is the right man for the job is a question for another day. He is still 23 and learning the game and could be a decent option for the future but Pochettino and the Spurs need a readymade article and should no more be looking at unproven talent, especially after the failings of Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko at the club.
