Manchester United will have been disappointed, having dropped out of the top-4 spots from the Premier League this season. However, all that would have gone out of the window after they managed to enter into the group stage of the Champions League after a 2-0 victory over young Ajax side in the Europa League final.
The Red Devils are now the fifth team to enter the elite competition and Mourinho will know that his side needs some star additions to be able to compete at the highest level next season. One player that is constantly linked with a move to Chelsea is Ivan Perisic.
The Croatian international has been in terrific form for the Italian outfit this season but with the Serie A side looking to cut down on wages, he could be out of the club before the start of the next season. United were reportedly happy to meet his valuation of £40m but reports suggest that the Serie A club are now holding out on £50m, which has seen Mourinho look elsewhere.
And it is now reported that he wants to dig into one of his previous clubs for Brazilian winger Willian. The pacey star has been one of the best players for Chelsea since his move to the club a few years ago. He was a mainstay under Jose Mourinho, in his second stint at the club, where he lifted the league at the Stamford Bridge.
However, Willian has not been able to establish himself at the first choice under Antonio Conte yet and is still looking to impress the Italian. He has fallen down the pecking order and Mourinho now wants to come to his rescue.
He has recently revealed that he wants to stay at the Stamford Bridge for years to come, a move to Manchester United could be beneficial for both parties.
The winger is unhappy with his time in London and could be the first choice for Mourinho at Old Trafford, with a squad overhaul in progress. He might cost slightly a similar amount as Perisic, his experience in the Premier League will surely make him a better option.
Having already worked under Mourinho, Willian knows what is expected of him and this might help him turn into an even better star in years to come.
Perisic is an exciting option that can turn into a sensation but in his first year at England, at 28, he may not be a part of the long-term project Mourinho has planned at Old Trafford. He is a decent signing but at his price, Perisic is not a better option than Willian from across town.
