The 2016-17 season of the Scottish Premiership was an utterly mediocre one based on the output for Rangers as they looked quite abject and sluggish more often than not. While their arch rivals, Celtic, earned themselves a domestic treble by clinching the League Cup, the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup, the Gers seemingly failed to construct a monumental challenge and could only muster a third-place finish in the Scottish top division with 67 points. One of the things that have been derived from looking at the manner in which the Rangers performed this season is that they have stagnated terribly.
Pedro Caixinha’s infant regime, ever since succeeding Mark Warburton for the managerial post at the Ibrox Stadium, hasn’t kicked off in a manner in which the Rangers faithful would have wanted. Caixinha has many issues to solve throughout and a huge overhaul is the call of the hour.
One of the prime areas of concern during the summer transfer window for the Portuguese would be to bolster his attacking arsenal and one of the latest reports have stated that he is planning to lure Mexican international, Eduardo Herrera to the Glasgow-based club.
The Light Blues have found it pretty hard to find the back of the net, having scored merely 56 goals in the Scottish Premiership during the season which just transpired (50 goals lesser than what the Celts manoeuvred). When an ageing forward in the shape of Kenny Miller happens to be the leading goal getter with 11 goals, one must admit that there is a dire need of a change.
The former Al-Gharafa boss, with his interest in signing Herrera, has implied that he is all set to knit a core team for himself and having worked with him in the past at Santus Laguna, he knows he has the calibre to fit the bill.
Herrera has had fairly notable spells at the club level football so far in his career, with his latest loan spell with Veracruz seeing him register three goals in 13 appearances in Liga MX. He has nine caps with the Mexican national side as well. However, at this point of his career, the 28-year-old is seemingly likely to look forward to finding a prominent place in a club with a decent reputation and cultivate the best form of his life and there is no reason why the opportunity to join the Teddy Bears should not appeal to him.
In Herrera, Caixinha would be getting a good striker and considering the experience he has under his belt, he looks capable enough of leading the Rangers’ attack next season.
