Southampton have generated an interest in Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah. The Ghanaian international has attracted a number of clubs but the Saints are favourites to land the player. The midfielder has a contract till 2019 but his limited game time could pursue him of a move away from his current club. Juventus are ready to let the player go and St Mary’s might be his next destination.
Southampton had another top ten finish as they ended the season in the eight spot in the Premier League table. The 28-year-old has a contract with the Turin club until 2018 but is said to be frustrated at his limited role.
The midfielder has been at the club since his move from Udinese in 2012 and has gone through various ups and downs in this time. His role in this season has been reduced to appearances from the bench as he has been mostly used as a backup option for Alex Sandro in the left back position.
Chelse and Arsenal were interested in him but the Italian club were not ready to release the player. Now that there are sufficient players at the club, the Italian side might feel free to let him go. The reigning Italian champions will demand a fee of £10m, however, a deal would only be possible after the Champions League final as Max Allegri won’t risk losing a player before one of the important days in the club’s history.
Asamoah has netted two goals this season and could be a valuable asset for the Saints. They have suffered problems in the middle of the park as the likes of Jordy Clasie and Sam McQueene were not able to showcase their best form this season.
The inclusion of this energetic midfielder will bring out the best from the other player as his ability to engineer the play from the middle of the pitch is immense. He is one of that kind of midfielders whose work rate is high and he can contribute to the defence and attack simultaneously. Allegri mostly used him in a defensive role as a left back and that describes his versatility on the pitch.
Asamoah is at the peak of his career and a move to the St Mary’s would be ideal for him. He has had his problems with injuries but that can be dealt with proper care and utilisation. Given the current competition in the Premier League, a midfielder of his quality deserves to play for a team like Southampton.
