Everyone would agree that Tony Pulis did a brilliant job this season with West Bromwich Albion as the Baggies finished in the 10th position with 45 points, the most they have ever achieved in the Premier League. While many did criticise the Welshman for his defensive gameplay, which involved sitting back and hitting opponents on the counter, it worked wonders for them in the league.
Their immense strength from set-pieces was on an exhibition against Arsenal as they beat the North-London side 3-1 at Hawthorns. While some disappointing results didn’t let them keep their place in the eighth position after Everton, Europa League will definitely be a target for the club next season.
Here are the stars and the duds of West Bromwich Albion from this season-
Stars
Jose Salomon Rondon- The Venezuelan international had one of the most difficult jobs this season under Tony Pulis. Being the only centre-forward in the whole squad, everyone looked to pass to him at every chance, expecting an outstanding conversion rate at the same time. Of course, he couldn’t be very prolific given Albion’s ultra-defensive tactics but still managed to get eight goals and two assists, with an accuracy of 66%.
Darren Fletcher- The skipper was a steady rock for the team at the centre of the park. Pulis either played with a two pivot or a single one from time to time. And the former Manchester United star adapted seamlessly. He managed to score two goals and provide three assists. He completed 934 passes with a pass accuracy of 77%.
Gareth McAuley- Perhaps the biggest surprise package this season, Pulis should be credited for bringing out the best from the 37-year-old. He made sure his age wasn’t a hindrance in getting what he wanted. He became the club’s second highest scorer this season with six goals and an assist. At the back too, he was unshakeable, winning 59% of his average duels.
Duds
Nacer Chadli- Probably the only star in the West Bromwich Albion squad and a lot was expected from him since his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur. But, the Belgian international has been largely disappointing, scoring only five goals and managing the same number of assists in 31 appearances. He was poor defensively and had only a 40% shot accuracy.
Allan Nyom- A regular in Pulis’ side, the Cameroon was possibly the weakest link in an otherwise solid defence. Yes, he was played out of position on the left flank for quite some time, but that shouldn’t have affected his defensive contribution. He could win only 47% of his average duels.
Jake Livermore- A midseason arrival at the Hawthorns, the English midfielder was brought in to bring some stability in the middle of the park. But, he was largely anonymous having no effect whatsoever. He managed to win only 39% of his average duels.
