This has to be one of the toughest seasons in the history of Swansea City as they remained very close to potential relegation. But a strong second half from the Wales-based club saw them finishing higher up in the 15th position. The appointment of Paul Clement seemed to have changed the mood at the Liberty stadium as they have been in a jovial mood in the last few matches.
The Wales club picked 13 points from the last 15 matches which smoothened their way towards their survival. They switched gear at the right moment and Paul Clement’s guidance helped them a lot in this bumpy ride. A number of players have performed by moving out of their skin while a number of renowned players faltered rapidly. Here are the success and failure stories of this season for the Swans:
Stars
Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Icelandic playmaker has been their saviour this season. In the midst of a very error prone campaign, the 27-year-old has performed like a bed of roses as the Swans were seen rubbing shoulders with the Premier League heavyweights in the English top flight.
The assist king racked up 13 assists in the Premier League this term and is third on the list only after Kevin De Bruyne (18) and Christian Eriksen (15). Without his services, it would not have been possible for them to survive the drop as the Swans were submerged deep inside the relegation zone midway through the season.
Fernando Llorente
The arrival of Llorente was a very low key affair as there were no expectations from the veteran striker. But he went on to be one of the vital cogs in this Swansea side as his rapid rise helped the team immensely. The 32-year-old ex-Juventus forward has a 66% pass accuracy which is very decent in his first season in England. He struck 15 times this season and most importantly he delivered in crunch situations when they needed him the most.
Alfie Mawson
Despite the fact that the Wales base club have fared very poorly and have conceded a whopping 70 goals this season, Mawson has been the player who has tried his best. But he is a bit lucky as no club has survived the relegation after conceding 70 goals in the history of the league.
Duds
Lukasz Fabianski
The Polish keeper had a nightmarish outing as nothing seemed to have gone in the right way at one point of the season. His carelessness in between the sticks almost cost them a place in the Premier League next season.
Ki Sung-Yueng
The South Korean had his fair share of chances in the midfield but failed to take them. A number of shoddy displays surely caught the attention of Clement and he might be shown the door this summer.
Bob Bradley
If Swansea would have been relegated Bob Bradley had to be given most of the credit. The American failed to yield a single positive thing during his stint at the Liberty stadium. He rotation of the starting lineup in almost every match created a lot of mess and ruckus as the Swans had to undergo a traumatise period.
