The 2016-17 campaign of the Sky Bet Championship was an absolute rollercoaster ride for Leeds United. For a major chunk of the term, it seemingly appeared that under the tutelage of Garry Monk, the Whites would be able to earn themselves a playoff spot (at least) as the former Swansea City manager handsomely dealt with the baptism of fire which he ventured into. However, the West Yorkshire based outfit failed to cross the line this season as they succumbed terribly during the business end of the campaign, thus rendering their relentless toil completely fruitless.
However, it would be important for Leeds United to quickly buckle up their seat belts and attempt to get promoted to the top tier of English football next season and to do the same, they cannot afford to be complacent or let their failure hover over their future endeavours.
For registering something spectacular next season, they would have to make the utmost use of the summer transfer window and beef up their attacking arsenal in particular. Time and again, we have seen Chris Wood singlehandedly catering to the offensive requirements of the club and it goes without saying that he would need some support to continue doing what he does the best.
Apparently, Exeter City’s sensational youngster in the shape of Ollie Watkins is believed to have fallen on the radar of Monk (despite the fact that his own future at the Elland Road is a subject of speculation). The League Two outfit are seemingly likely to slap a price tag of £4 million around the collar of Watkins, and frankly speaking, the Peacocks mustn’t refrain from making a move for the youngster after the contributions he has made for the Grecians in what has been a very productive season for them. He is a promising talent and there no doubt whatsoever to this perception.
The 21-year-old banged 15 goals and registered 7 assists and has inked his stature as someone who would fluently breeze past the defenders and try to beat the opposition’s goalkeeper after garnering adequate space for himself. He offers versatility as well as he is capable enough to ply his trade as a striker, as a winger as well as a central attacking midfielder.
Watkins toils relentlessly throughout the pitch and gets himself into right areas at right times and creates bundles of chances for his teammates as well. A move to Leeds United in the summer will not only enhance their chances for a promotion but will also give him a better platform to perform.
