It seems buying back players is the new trend running in the Premier League now. After Manchester United bought back Paul Pogba from Juventus last season and Chelsea bought David Luiz back from Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham Hotspur are the next side to join the bandwagon. As per reports, the Lilywhites are willing to bring back one of their previous failures, Gylfi Sigurdsson, this summer following an outstanding season by the Icelandic international.
Tottenham have been phenomenal this term missing out on the title to Chelsea only just, and with a set first team to play with next season, Mauricio Pochettino is aiming to fill the little gaps that would make the Spurs a complete side next season as they set out for the Champions League and Premier League title again.
Pochettino’s men answered their critics well who denigrated their lack of quality on the bench. The emergence of Heung-Min Son, Harry Winks, Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier has sorted that out to some extent. But, it cannot be denied that the Argentine boss would have found it immensely difficult to replace Christian Eriksen or Dele Alli had they been injured this season, and it would have surely affected their season.
Tottenham hardly have a player on the bench, who can be that productive in the attacking third behind Harry Kane in the absence of Eriksen and Alli. The buy of Moussa Sissoko was a huge disaster and now with Everton labelling their summer target, Ross Barkley, at a whopping £50 million, Sigurdsson seems a feasible option.
The Icelandic playmaker has been brilliant in a below average Swansea City squad scoring nine goals and assisting 13 times. The figures are definitely better than Barkley and with a quality squad like Spurs, he could be devastating. However, his previous two-year stint at White Hart Lane wasn’t a successful as all expected it to be.
Sigurdsson could manage eight goals and four assists in two seasons and was ultimately sold to Swansea City in 2014. Pochettino certainly thinks it was a wrong decision on the part of the club and would want him back next season. And reportedly, Spurs would have to splash something in the region of £25 million for him this season.
However, Swansea manager Paul Clement is confident that the player would opt to stay next season after a commendable turnaround by the South Wales club following a horrible start to the season. Sigurdsson is a fan favourite at Swansea and also received their player of the year honour lately. Although a move to Spurs would be ambitious, a first team action is not guaranteed.
