Manchester City’s recent victory over the Baggies has all but secured their place in the Champions League next season but they will need all three points from their final game to make the 3rd place their own. Pep Guardiola is already planning for the future as he cannot afford another season without silverware. And right up his transfer plans for the club is the future of star striker Sergio Aguero.
After the rise of Gabriel Jesus, Guardiola has preferred the youngster over Aguero on more than one occasion and this has seen the Argentine frustrated with a lack of game time and he will surely look to play elsewhere next season if that is the case yet again.
Aguero has repeatedly revealed that he wants to win the UCL with City and he now has a chance with Guardiola at the helm, but he may not play a huge role in the first team and might be tempted to step away. But should City let him leave?
With 31 goals and five assists in all competitions this season, Aguero is the top goal scorer for City but he has not been able to help them through tough times in Europe and also in domestic competitions. He is 28, and in the prime of his career and there is no reason why he should not quit City if he is not given enough game time.
Standing as one of the best ever finishers the Premier League has seen, Aguero has been prolific for more than four years now and is also one of the most consistent strikers in recent times all over Europe. He has the ability to create something out of nothing and is capable of winning his side the game on his day.
Guardiola feels that the lack of movement in the final third from the Argentine is hampering his side’s progress and while it might be true, Aguero is a target man and not a false-9 who will make space for wider players in the middle.
It is a system that suits Guardiola well when his attackers can exchange places nonchalantly in the final third. Aguero limits this and the manager is fed up. He wants the 28-year-old only as a backup and is ready to offload him if the right offer is on the table.
As tough as it might be, losing Sergio Aguero cannot all be bad for City. He will go for more than £60m this summer, which can be used to replace him, but he is right up there with the best in the business and could be hard to replace.
So Guardiola might hold on to him till he finds a proper replacement ready to join the Etihad but at the moment, he is convinced that he will only hamper their progress and in such a case, it is best for all parties to part way. Do you think City should sell Aguero?
