Swansea City are reportedly planning a surprise move for former Chelsea skipper John Terry this summer as the English centre-half has decided to leave the club after 17 years of service. The South Wales club has been a changed side since Paul Clement took over at the helm as they secured their stay in the top-flight football after a convincing win over Sunderland last week.
Though a pretty underwhelming season, the Swans have had some star performers this season in Fernando Llorente, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Federico Fernandes, Leroy Fer, who would be difficult for the club to retain this summer. And the manager seems to have already started working on those proceedings.
Selling Ashley Williams to Everton last game did cost them as the side conceded 69 goals in the league so far. And the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid assistant manager will make sure such a debacle doesn’t happen next season. In Alfie Mawson and Fernandes, Clement has the perfect mix of youth and experience at the heart of his defence and what they essentially lack is a leader, which fits John Terry.
A move is pretty much possible given Clement’s amicable relationship with the old centre-half during their time at Chelsea. Clement said, “I will have a conversation with him. I’ve known him a long time… I don’t know what his thinking is… there’s been talk in the media that it’s going to be his last game. Whether he’ll go on here in the Premier League or abroad, that’s all unsure at the moment.
Clement has made his intentions pretty clear and has also declared their involvement in the race with other midtable Premier League clubs, who are keeping tabs on the 36-year-old’s developments. Terry featured in Chelsea’s last week’s win against Watford, in which he scored a goal and was also responsible in conceding one.
This was mostly because of his irregular first-team action in the league. After David Luiz arrived last summer, Terry could make only eight appearances in the league. He is expected to feature in Chelsea’s last home game against Sunderland too, as Conte is giving it easy now with the title secured.
Terry’s massive experience can be a huge asset for Swansea next season. The centre-half has over 650 games for Chelsea and 491 games in the Premier League. In this span, he has 65 goals and 29 assists for the Blues. Terry would definitely want to reach the 500 mark in the league, which means moving to a new club at the end of the season. And among all the options, Clement should have the edge over others.
