Liverpool fans were treated to a sizzling display, one that has become extinct in recent times, as they managed to put four past a jubilant West Ham side that were fresh from a victory over local rivals Spurs just days ago. That victory has all but sealed their place in the top-4 but that was not the only advancement at the club this weekend.
Reports broke out that Liverpool have found a solution to their left-back problem as English news outfit Mirror ran a story that they are set to announce the signing of Hull City left-back Andrew Robertson after the end of the season.
The first choice left-back for the Scottish national team, Robertson is one of the few players in the Premier League that have managed to cement their place at left-back for their clubs throughout the season. He has made 38 appearances for the Tigers this season to pick up three assists to go with a goal.
Marco Silva’s side showed decent resilience late in the season but it was not enough to keep Premier League football running at the KCOM stadium for another season and Robertson is one of the many players who might stay in the top flight, playing for another club. So luring him to Anfield, with Champions League football, would not have been a huge problem for the Reds.
An attacking full-back with the eye for the defence creaking pass, Robertson loves to spend time in the final third of the field. He can dribble past opponents with ease and though is not the quickest around, is decent in his tracking back. He is disciplined at the back and does not give silly fouls away.
At just 23, he is still learning the defensive side of the game and is a real liability in set piece situations. But he is more than ready to do the dirty work and will suit Liverpool’s style of play, quite literally. The Reds have been a mess at the back in recent seasons and need genuine full-backs who are strong in shutting shop, while also adding to the attack.
Robertson will definitely be a productive fullback at Liverpool but if he will make them stronger at the back is not an easy question to answer. Jurgen Klopp has used James Milner as the first choice full back this season and though he has had his troubles, has done a decent job. He is one of the most productive full-backs in the league this season and at just 31, may be available to play regularly for another season.
Robertson, who is still learning the English way of the game can work under him, learn for the future and under Klopp, can be the solution to Liverpool’s left-back problems for years to come. This transfer might also spell the end of one Alberto Moreno at Liverpool. Though not a big name, do you think Robertson is the right man for Liverpool and their UCL ambitions?
