According to reports, Everton are considering signing Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic playmaker has caught the attention of Koeman with his brilliant display for Swansea in the ongoing season. Everton are poised to finish in the seventh position which means they would be competing in Europe next season. Ronald Koeman knows the significance of playing in Europe and that’s why the idea of signing experienced players.
Also, the confusion over Ross Barkley’s future must have forced him to think about alternate options. Everton had offered him a new contract but he is yet to sign on the dotted line. Koeman has reportedly given him a week to decide on his future. The England midfielder is also the subject of speculation from both the North London clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal and given the current situation, he might leave the club after the season gets over.
Swansea City might not have had the best of seasons but that didn’t stop Sigurdsson from playing quite well actually. Despite the Welsh club having avoided the drop, offers are bound to come for this playmaker and Swansea will be struggling to keep a hold of him.
The Wales-based Club have put a price tag of £30m on him but the Toffees are reluctant to spend that much for him. The Merseyside club are believed to be ready to splash £25m on him and it won’t be a bad deal for Swansea either. Sigurdsson is still only 27 years old and the fact that he has still a lot to offer has made him a hot prospect in the transfer market.
A number of players like Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley are expected to leave and Koeman needs to make sure that the balance remains good enough for Everton despite the absence of such players. Sigurdsson would be a perfect replacement for Barkley, rather he could be an upgraded version of Barkley if he fits in properly at the Merseyside.
He can take accurate free kicks, can take corners, can play on the wings and the list goes on. The former Spurs man has netted nine goals in this season and also contributed vigorously with another 13 assists in the English top tier. Everton shouldn’t have any problems meeting his £70,000 wage demand and both the club and the player would be a huge beneficiary if this deal happens.
