Gylfi Sigurdsson has been the only silver lining in what can be termed as a rather gloomy campaign in this year’s Premier League season for Swansea City. The Icelandic midfielder has been one of the most highly rated players in their line-up, with a number of clubs showing interest to bag him for the next season.
Reportedly, West Ham United are looking to bring in the influential midfielder from Swansea in the next transfer window. Their manager, Slaven Bilic, who is confirmed to retain his position for another season, is determined not to repeat the mistakes of the present season in the new one and is certain to bring in reinforcements to make his squad stronger to take on the rival clubs in the Premier League.
Their interest in the Iceland international has been closely competed by Everton. The Merseyside club’s manager Ronald Koeman has been one of the long-time admirers of Sigurdsson and is reportedly looking to bring him into his squad for the next season in case Swansea gets relegated.
Both the clubs might have to face rejection in their pursuit to procure the mercurial midfielder as his present club Swansea might not let him go in the next season.
Sigurdsson has been in exceptional form for Swansea throughout the current Premier League campaign, scoring nine goals for the club. He also has twelve assists to his name in the 36 games he has played this term. He, with his performance, has been trying his best to pull his team out of trouble and finally succeeded as Hull’s collapse at the hands of Palace ensured a say in the top-flight for Swansea City.
His current club’s coach, Paul Clement, is a big fan of the Icelandic midfielder’s stamina, prowess and fighting spirit that he has shown for his club throughout the current Premier League season. Clement has said that Sigurdsson is a highly underrated player despite his gallant performances and match winning efforts on the field. He has also said that he will try his best to keep the midfielder at the club for the next season.
The Iceland international has a contract with Swansea City which sees him staying with them till 2020. However, interests from clubs like West Ham United and Everton might make him leave Swansea in the next transfer window.
And that will indeed be a huge blow for the club and they will have to ensure their star players remain at the club to fortify their Premier League status again.
