Oriol Romeu has been one of the players who has been instrumental in holding together the Premier League club Southampton’s season together. The midfielder, who generally prefers to play for The Saints in a central role, has been by far their best player this season. He has also been named as Southampton’s Player of the Year for the current season as a recognition for his brilliant performance in their midfield.
Reportedly, Spanish giants, Barcelona are looking to bag the midfielder, who once used to be a part of their team, for the next season to strengthen their midfield. They are in search for a player whom they can use as a cover for their Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets. The Catalan club are sure that the Southampton midfielder will a perfect fit in the side and can play a very important role in the midfield.
Oriol Romeu was a part of Barcelona’s team till 2011 before joining Chelsea. During his stay at Barcelona, the Spanish midfielder started only one match for the Spanish giants against Sevilla and was left out for rest of the time of his stay at Nou Camp.
Things did not change much for the talented midfielder after he joined Chelsea in 2011 and he was being loaned out in successive seasons to the Spanish team Valencia and the German club VfB Stuttgart in 2013 and 2014.
In the next season, the Spanish midfielder was signed by Southampton. Things took a turn for Romeu as he dominated the midfield over the opposition playing the role of an anchorman with The Saints. His brilliant performance has been the main reason behind Barcelona looking to make a bid for their former player during the next summer window.
It has been a good year for the Spanish giants so far, with them being on the top of the ladder in the Spanish La Liga in the present season. However, Barcelona have been beaten prolifically by the Italian side Juventus that ended their run in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League this term.
Barcelona have been evidently lacking a player who can play effectively as a defensive screen just in front of the backline and can fend off attacks from the opposition, which can be fulfilled by their former player Romeu, given that he is open to a move back to the club. However, Southampton has been backing the talented Spaniard for a very long time and it will take a special offer for the two to part ways.
