Another season of enthralling football is coming to an end in the Premier League. While a number of teams have failed to make a mark this season, quite a few have been able to entertain their fans with gallant performances. Currently, Chelsea stands at the top of the Premier League table and are looked as potential winners for the current season, with seven points differentiating them from the second placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Last weekend was the 36th Matchweek of the Premier League and it produced a number of memorable and decisive moments. Out of them, three of the top talking points are described in the following lines-
The Hammer blow to Tottenham’s title expectations-
Tottenham was held as clear favourites as they went into their weekend clash with West Ham United. Fresh from a win against arch rivals Arsenal in the North London derby, Spurs have been at the top of their game throughout the current season whereas the Hammers are looking more of a demoralised side with their sensational midfielder Dmitri Payet leaving them during the last transfer window just before the deadline day.
However, the story turned out to be actually opposite when the two teams came face to face on the field. Manuel Lanzini scored the winner for the Hammers and helped his team defend the lead successfully. The result is nothing less than a telling blow to Spurs’ title hope, with the difference between them and Chelsea increasing to seven points.
Arsenal strengthening their European hopes with a win over The Red Devils-
The Gunners were on target twice to seal an unattractive yet effective win over their arch-rivals Manchester United last weekend. Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck hit the two goals for Arsenal, thus bolstering the North London club’s hope to make it past Manchester United and Manchester City and book a place in next year’s UEFA Champions League. Xhaka played an important role in the Arsenal midfield and opened the scoring with his long range effort, which hit the back of the Red Devils’ midfielder Ander Herrera before travelling 30 meters and finding the back of the net.
David Silva’s “magnifico” performance for his team-
The Spaniard was not the first choice for Pep Guardiola to start the matchup against Crystal Palace due to an injury scare. However, Silva was included in the Manchester City side right before the game and was at the top of his form for the Citizens to ensure a victory for his side, thus strengthening the chance of them making it to the Champions League next term.
