Manchester United fell to their first defeat in 27 league games at the Emirates recently and that will mean that they have to focus on the Europa League if they are to qualify for the Champions League next season. They have a decent chance of doing so with not many strong clubs left in the competition and Jose Mourinho is already planning for life next season.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured and Wayne Rooney not expected to stick around, Mourinho is in a spot of bother as he will have to spend on more than one attacker to improve his squad and allow them to compete at the highest level next season. And the latest striker linked with a move to Old Trafford is Manchester City star Sergio Aguero.
The former Atletico Madrid star joined the Etihad outfit back in 2011 and has scored 120 league goals in 177 appearances to date. He is currently the top goal scorer for Guardiola’s side with 31 goals in all competitions but he is now playing second fiddle to Brazil sensation Gabriel Jesus.
The 20-year old has been excellent in his first season at the club and Aguero might not be able to find first-team chances next season if he decides to stay. So is a move to Manchester United the right way to go for the Argentine?
Known as one of the best finishers in the world, Aguero is easily the best in the Premier League and also the most consistent. He has over the years bailed Manchester City out in games they failed to dominate and is a player who can make things happen out of the blue.
Though not too strong in the air, the 28-year old is an excellent finisher with a peculiar eye for goal. He can find the back of the net from all ranges and angles and is a genuine asset to have in your attack. At his age, he is still in his prime as a footballer and is sure to continue his dominance for at least another couple of years.
Reports from the Times suggest that Manchester United are ready to splash £55m for his services and at that price in this inflated market, it is a no-brainer. As already mentioned, Jose Mourinho will need more than one attacker to add to his squad this summer to help him compete on all four fronts next season and there are very few options in the transfer market more reliable than Aguero.
The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Andrea Belotti, Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata are all on the radar of the Old Trafford outfit and signing Aguero will mean that Mourinho will have to spend big on just one striker.
His experience in the league along with his scoring prowess are sure to improve the productivity and creativity of the United lineup next season but is he the man that Mourinho needs?
