Spurs did not manage to get the kind of start to the new Premier League season as they would have wished for. All they could manage against Ronald Koeman’s Everton at Goodison Park was a 1-1 draw. Not at all a result to be proud of given that the Everton squad is still under processing following the arrival of Koeman. From the last season Spurs had, they are strong favourites for the title this season but Pochettino’s boys looked far from ready for the big job.
Spurs have managed to bring only two players this summer in the form of Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen and fans have already started raising questions about the club’s activity in the market. We can expect the North London side to complete one or two more deals before the transfer window slams closed and a player that has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane is Portuguese midfielder, Adrien Silva.
Express Sport claims that Spurs are preparing a £13million swoop for the 27-year-old as Pochettino remains a big fan of the Sporting Lisbon midfielder. Although what remains a stumbling block in the deal is Spurs’ tight financial conditions as they work on their new stadium. Spurs need to sell before they can buy players and that gives Silva’s other admirers Everton a golden opportunity to bag his signature.
With the signing of Victor Wanyama earlier this summer, Spur bolstered their midfield ranks to some extent. However, they still do not have the luxury of having the plethora of midfield options with only Dier, Wanyama, and Dembele in the first team picture. Both Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb are on the fringes of the squad and not particularly rated highly by the manager.
Silva has been one of the standout players in the Portuguese Primeira Liga for quite a while now and it still remains a surprise why no big Premier League club has not lured him away. The midfield maestro enjoyed a stunning campaign last year as Sporting narrowly missed out on the Primeira Liga title, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists.
The Portuguese international has a relatively small frame of just 5 ft 9 in but he is well-built. Silva is blessed with a gifted balance and has an exemplary work ethics. He covers every blade of grass on the side and can create plenty of chances with his eye for a pass. The 27-year-old excels in picking out passes splitting the tightest of defences.
Both Wanyama and Dier are more defence-minded midfielders and Spurs will regret it if they fail to bring in more creativity in central midfield. Adrien Silva is a player they cannot afford to miss on. For just £13m, it will be a coup for a player of the midfield maestro’s quality.
