Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is still dreaming of a reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo at the Old Trafford. Ronaldo made a move to Real Madrid after spending six seasons with the Red Devils. Madrid paid a whopping £80m in 2009 but it seems to be a bargain buy for the Spanish giants as Ronaldo has gone on to be the club’s top goal scorer of all time.
United’s willingness to bring Ronaldo back to Manchester is not new. Back in 2013, they were very much close to sealing a deal for the Portuguese superstar but the appointment of David Moyes by the United hierarchy played spoilsport to the deal and it didn’t materialise. Ronaldo’s rise to prominence hasn’t gone unnoticed since his move to Spain.
The 32-year-old also added his first international trophy as Portugal lifted the Euro Cup last year and is also on the verge of winning two consecutive Champions League title with Los Blancos. Ronaldo’s proximity with sir Alex Ferguson is not unknown and if United are to sign him they might approach Ferguson to pursue the interest.
However, things could change if United fail to clinch a top four spot. They still are in the contention to win the Europa League as they recently got the better off Celta Viga in the first leg of the semifinal and should they win the competition it might pave a way for their old prodigal son. United are willing to pay any amount to bring him back to the Old Trafford.
Ronaldo signed a new four-year contract in November and the player is still a very much part of Zinedine Zidane’s strategy. Ferguson signed this raw talent from Sporting Lisbon and during his six years stint, he went on to become one of the most deadly attackers.
His rivalry with Lionel Messi has been a highlight of his career and he is currently enjoying a stellar season with Madrid. He has scored two hat-tricks in the last three matches of the Champions League and it is largely due to his goals that Madrid are right now just two matches away from rewriting history.
Jose Mourinho had the chance to work with the Portuguese when he was at the helm of Real Madrid and he would welcome him with open hands. Though this deal is very unlikely to happen, should United sign Ronaldo, it would be very beneficiary for them as it would add a lot to their brand value.
