As per reports, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a bid for Bournemouth’s revelation, Joshua King, this summer as the Lilywhites aim to find a potent backup for star striker Harry Kane before kicking off next season.
Spurs have been nothing short of brilliant this season and have been the only side to match Chelsea’s consistency and form at the top level. They trail the Blues by just four points and with three games to go for both the teams, Spurs are unlikely to catch them in the title race. While Mauricio Pochettino has proven many critics wrong, who had stated that the North-London side had little to no quality on the bench, it is the thin bench that has been the thin margin between the teams, it seems.
The Argentine gaffer had brought in Vincent Janssen last summer as a back-up for Harry Kane, a move that failed terribly. The Dutch striker could manage only six goals and four assists in all competition, giving the manager enough to give a second thought concerning his future at the club. And if not for the surprising form of Heung Min-Son, Spurs would have been nowhere near posing a title challenge.
Spurs over-reliance on Kane is a widely-known fact, and while they did well this year when the 23-year-old was out for a month, they had bottled it up in the initial stages of the season. Kane had missed as many as 11 fixtures at the beginning of the season when Pochettino’s men could only manage only six wins. Tottenham wouldn’t want such slack in performance next season for sure, and King could be a wise option to have.
The 25-year-old Norwegian international has had a decent season in front of goal, scoring 15 goals in 34 top-flight appearances. Very few forwards have achieved this feat, and given the average midfield Bournemouth have played with, King’s ability only shines more.
To Spurs’ good fortune, the striker sounded quite happy with the rumour connecting him to the club although he opted to focus on finishing the season on a good note for the Cherries. In an interview with Norwegian publication, Nettavisen, King said, “This is the first time I’ve heard of this. “I’m happy to be recognised, but I’m only focusing on the next three games.”
While Tottenham are a bigger club than Bournemouth any day, getting a player from a fellow Premier League side won’t be easy and given that King has just extended his contract to four years last summer in September, he will surely not be cheap.
